COP30: the world focused on the climate

This November, Belém, in the state of Pará, is hosting COP30, the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference. The event brings together leaders from nearly 200 countries, scientists, business representatives, and civil society organizations to discuss solutions to the greatest global challenge of our time: climate change.

What is the COP?

The acronym COP stands for Conference of the Parties. It is the highest decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), created in 1992 during the Earth Summit (Eco-92) in Rio de Janeiro.

Since then, the COP has taken place every year in a different country, with the goal of assessing progress in the fight against global warming and establishing international commitments. Among the best-known outcomes are the Kyoto Protocol (1997) and the Paris Agreement (2015).

Why is COP30 important?

COP30 is crucial because it marks the first global assessment of the results of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the increase in the planet’s average temperature to no more than 1.5°C by the end of the century. Countries must present new and more ambitious climate plans (known as NDCs – Nationally Determined Contributions) outlining how they intend to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The choice of Belém as the host city also carries strong symbolism. The Amazon region is one of the most important biomes in the world for climate balance, due to its ability to absorb carbon and regulate rainfall patterns. Holding COP30 in the heart of the Amazon highlights both the need to protect the forests and the urgency of finding sustainable development pathways.

Impacts for Brazil and the world

Brazil in the spotlight: The country will have the opportunity to showcase its progress in environmental policies and in sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and the bioeconomy.

Focus on the Amazon: Discussions will reinforce the importance of combating deforestation and valuing the standing forest.

Global commitments: The conference is expected to deliver more concrete and viable targets for reducing emissions and financing the energy transition in developing countries.

More than an event

COP30 is not just a diplomatic meeting. It is a decision-making space that influences everyone’s lives —from the way we produce and consume energy to the impacts on food security, public health and the global economy.

Discussing climate means discussing the future of the planet. And COP30 is a milestone in determining whether we are ready to transform commitments into real actions capable of slowing global warming and building a more sustainable world.
