The future of learning in the maritime industry: Trends, challenges and key skills

January 2021
futuro do aprendizado na indústria marítima

The pursuit of knowledge has always been connected to technological advancement — from cave paintings to the internet, from libraries to simulators. The explosion of information, the rise of social media, and the widespread consumption of fast content have shaped a new generation of professionals with shorter attention spans and intense digital habits.

In the maritime industry, the adoption of modern learning methods has been slower, mainly due to the sector’s relatively small size and the difficulty in finding specialized content on mainstream platforms.

New approaches are emerging to address this challenge:

  • Microlearning: short, focused learning sessions, better aligned with the digital habits of today’s workforce.
  • Gamification: applying game elements to make learning more engaging and effective.
  • Simulators and Virtual Reality: immersive environments that allow for safe, efficient practice in areas such as machinery control, oily water separators, diesel engines and purifiers.

At the same time, the maritime professional of the future must develop new competencies:

  • The ability to process large volumes of data;
  • Skills to recognize patterns and transform data into actionable insights;
  • Understanding the risks and limitations of automation;
  • Proficiency in remote work, change management, effective communication, and leadership;
  • The ability to handle stress and maintain continuous learning.

The transformation of learning is no longer optional, but an urgent necessity for the development, safety and sustainability of the maritime industry.
